There are women who swear by a facial on a weekly basis, but I live in Los Angeles, where the number of skin doctors and plastic surgeons, per capita, is one of the highest in the world.
Some believe that a facial makes them look better because their skin feel better after a facial. Other women believe that facials are not needed at all. You can do all of it by yourself.
Part of what all of them say is true. A facial mask makes the skin look better and feel better, but the essential part of the facial – the nutritional part, when the skin is cleaned and infused with different elements can be done at home.
That is why so many big and small cosmetics companies have come up with facial masks that you can do at home. Whether as a habit or a filler between facials, facial masks can do the trick. But not all of them do the same thing.
Facial masks benefit the skin by doing these things:
- They removes impurities; dirt and dead skin that normal washing and drying does not remove.
- They nourish the skin by adding substances it needs to look better and feel better.
- They provide an opportunity for relaxation and shutting up. With some, for a period of time, you are not supposed to move the face muscles.
Looking at those three elements they appear like a good way to lead your life in other aspects as well.
Deep Cleansing Masks
The cleansing masks usually come in the form of a thick paste that hardens, trapping everything on the face surface that is not tied down very well.
Cleansing masks can be made of clay, gel which hardens to a rubbery substance, or mud from exotic places like Monte Catini in Italy or the Dead Sea in Israel. The clay mask is very good for absorbing excess oil from the skin. There are those masks that use paste with high iron content which is lifted up by passing over the skin with a magnet covered tissue.
Other medicated cleansing masks contain salicylic acid which penetrates deep into the pores to prevent acne from happening.
The gentle peeling of the mask after it hardened creates the cleansing effect in some of them. Those are good for all skin types. Others rely on the product itself to break down and dissolve the impurities which are washed off.
Another form of deep cleansing exists in the micro abrasion department. Those exfoliating creams are applied to the face and gently rub, with small crystals, the skin. Some recommend to do this kind of rub with the help of an old electric toothbrush, to provide a greater friction.
Those are excellent to restore the skin’s moisture and flexibility. Most of the masks come in the form of a cream in different colors which is applied to the face and kept there for a period of time. Then the cream, if not absorbed completely, is washed off with the help of a washcloth and warm water.
These masks attempt to fight the signs of aging by diminishing fine lines. They often include alpha Hydroxy acids. These masks should be used on a regular basis to see the best results. The skin looks and feels smoother.
Diminish Pigmentation Masks
Those masks that include Retinol and vitamin C work best on hyperpigmentation. They too have to be used on a regular basis to see the best results.
When using creams or masks with Retinol, your skin will become very sensitive to the sun harming rays. Always wear UV and UB protection when going outdoors, even on a cloudy day.
Those are the masks which have copper peptides or CoQ10. They are supposed to increase the production of collagen which will result in a firmer skin.
Almost all the cosmetic companies have few face masks. You can find them in the drug store or in the department store but you can also make them at home from natural ingredients; scrubs made of oatmeal and yogurt, of sugar and warm water and even all-clay cat litter which is mixed with water and applied to the face in a circular motion, making sure it gets into all the pores. To make it smell better, you can add a few drops of essential oil.
Vitamins play an important part in natural ingredients that homemade masks are made of. The ingredients change according to the skin type and the age of the person. Energy is supplied by sugars, honey and fruit. Fruit acids (alpha hydroxy) helps in shedding dead skin cells and becomes more important with age. Milk products, egg yolks and vegetable oils is used to add lecithin to the skin.
DIY Homemade Facial Masks Recipes
Heavy Cream Mask
- 1 Tbsp heavy cream
- 1 g. of baking soda
- 1 tsp honey
Mix cream with baking soda until the consistency is that of a shaving cream. Add the honey and apply to the face. Keep for 20 minutes and remove with water, your skin should feel smooth after that.
- 2 Tbsp coconut oil
- 1 egg yolk
- 1 Tbsp honey
- 1 Tbsp yogurt
- 1 tsp sugar
Process in a blender until smooth. Apply to the face for 25 minutes and wash off with warm water.
Mask for Wrinkles
- 2 Tbsp peas
- 1 Tbsp evening primrose oil
- 1 Tbsp yogurt
- 1 Tbsp grape seed extract
- 1 cup carrot juice
Mix together with the help of a blender and apply to the face. Leave for 30 minutes.
This mask is great for women in their 40s when the changes in the skin are more pronounced.
Youthful Skin Mask
- 1 Tbsp of brewer’s yeast
- 1 cup of yogurt
- 1 Tbsp honey
Stir the yeast and the yogurt together and refrigerate overnight. Add the honey just before you are about to apply the mask. This mask contains large amounts of vitamin B complex.
Smooth Skin Mask
- 1 ripe banana
- 1 over ripped avocado
- 1 Tbsp of chopped cucumber
- 1 Tbsp yogurt
- 1 Tbsp olive oil
Mix with the help of a blender, apply and keep for 30 minutes. Rinse off with warm water.
This is one of the new trends in homemade facial masks.
- 1 packet of granulated aspirin (they also come in lemon flavor)
- 1 Tbsp honey
Mix them together, apply on the face and leave for 20 minutes. After you wash it off, the skin will appear smooth and soft. It is said to minimize pimples and blemishes. And if you happen to taste some of it, by applying to the lips and accidentally licking them, you’ll find it also tastes great.
